At Happy Years Pet Co, we believe you deserve complete transparency about what goes into every product we carry—and why ingredient quality matters so much for aging animals. Senior pets have different physiological needs than younger animals, and the supplement market doesn't always reflect that.

Why Ingredient Quality Matters More for Senior Pets

As dogs and cats age, their bodies become less efficient at processing poor-quality inputs. An older dog with reduced kidney function, for example, is more vulnerable to low-grade ingredients or excessive fillers than a young, healthy adult. Senior pets often have:

Reduced organ efficiency (liver and kidneys)
More sensitive digestive systems
Greater susceptibility to inflammatory responses
Existing health conditions that can interact with certain additives

This is why we apply stricter ingredient standards to the products we carry than the general pet supplement market typically requires.

Key Active Ingredients We Look For

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is one of the most studied compounds in veterinary joint health. It is a naturally occurring amino sugar that plays a key role in building and maintaining cartilage—the cushioning tissue between joints.

As dogs and cats age, their natural glucosamine production declines, leading to cartilage breakdown and the discomfort associated with arthritis and reduced mobility. Supplemental glucosamine helps slow this process and supports joint lubrication.

What we require: Glucosamine Hydrochloride (HCl) or Glucosamine Sulfate at levels shown to be effective in veterinary research. Products with token amounts or unlisted quantities do not meet our standard.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

MSM is an organic sulfur compound with well-documented anti-inflammatory properties. In senior pets, it works synergistically with glucosamine to reduce joint inflammation, improve range of motion, and support cellular repair.

Sulfur is essential for the production of collagen and other connective tissue components that degrade with age. MSM provides a bioavailable source of dietary sulfur that supports not just joints, but skin, coat, and overall cellular health.

What we require: Pharmaceutical-grade MSM from reputable sources. We avoid products that combine MSM with unspecified binding agents that could reduce bioavailability.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA & DHA)

Omega-3 fatty acids—particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)—are essential fats that senior pets cannot produce in sufficient quantities on their own. They are among the most broadly beneficial ingredients for aging animals, supporting:

Joint inflammation: EPA reduces inflammatory cytokines that contribute to arthritis pain
Cognitive function: DHA supports brain health and may help slow cognitive decline in senior dogs
Cardiovascular health: Both EPA and DHA support heart function
Coat and skin: Reduces dryness and improves coat quality common in older pets

What we require: Products must specify the omega-3 source (fish oil, krill oil, or algae oil) and list EPA and DHA amounts separately—not just "total omega-3." We prioritize molecularly distilled fish oil, which removes heavy metals and environmental contaminants—particularly important for senior animals with reduced detoxification capacity.

Chondroitin Sulfate

Chondroitin works alongside glucosamine to protect and rebuild cartilage. It inhibits the enzymes responsible for cartilage breakdown and attracts water into cartilage tissue, maintaining its cushioning function.

What we require: Chondroitin Sulfate derived from bovine or marine sources at effective concentrations, with the source clearly stated on the product label.

What We Reject

Just as important as what we include is what we exclude. Products are rejected if they contain:

Artificial colors or dyes — no nutritional value, potential sensitivity triggers in older animals
Excessive fillers — ingredients like corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, or unnamed "natural flavors" in high quantities
Undisclosed proprietary blends — if a company hides the amounts of active ingredients, we cannot verify efficacy
Xylitol or artificial sweeteners — toxic to dogs at any life stage
High sodium or sugar content — problematic for senior pets with cardiovascular or metabolic conditions

Our Evaluation Process

Before any product enters our catalog, our team reviews:

Full ingredient label analysis — every ingredient is researched for safety and appropriateness in senior animals
Active ingredient quantities — compared against established guidelines for senior pet supplementation
Manufacturing standards — we prioritize products made in GMP-certified facilities or by NASC (National Animal Supplement Council) member companies
